Central Market — or Pasar Seni, as it's known in Malay — is a heritage building in the heart of Kuala Lumpur that has been a commercial hub since 1888. Originally a wet market selling fresh produce and meat, it was saved from demolition in the 1980s and converted into a cultural marketplace focused on Malaysian arts, crafts, and souvenirs. The Art Deco building, painted in a distinctive pastel blue, is now a national heritage site and one of KL's most recognizable landmarks. For visitors, it offers a rare chance to shop for genuinely Malaysian-made goods in a central, covered, walkable space — a welcome contrast to the city's gleaming malls.

Local Tips

  1. 1

Prices are not fixed in most stalls — polite bargaining is expected, especially for batik, jewellery, and art pieces. Start at around 70% of the asking price and work from there.

  2. 2

The Kasturi Walk arcade running alongside the market has a more relaxed, street-market feel and is a good spot for cheaper souvenirs and casual snacks — worth walking the full length before you start shopping inside.

  3. 3

Central Market is directly connected to the Pasar Seni LRT station, making it one of the easiest major attractions in KL to reach without a taxi or Grab.

  4. 4

The upper floor tends to be quieter and has a better mix of locally made art and antiques — many visitors only browse the ground floor and miss some of the more interesting workshops and galleries upstairs.

Why Visit

01

One of the best places in KL to buy Malaysian handicrafts — batik fabric, pewter goods, shadow puppet art, wood carvings, and traditional musical instruments — all under one roof.

02

The building itself is worth seeing: a restored 1930s Art Deco structure with high ceilings and a colonial-era character that feels genuinely different from the city's modern retail landscape.

03

The surrounding Kasturi Walk, an outdoor pedestrian arcade attached to the market, adds street food stalls and live cultural performances to the mix, making it a complete afternoon out.
