The Shard is a 72-storey glass skyscraper completed in 2012, designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano and rising 310 metres above London Bridge. It's the tallest building in the United Kingdom and one of the most recognisable skylines additions in Europe. The building houses offices, restaurants, a hotel (Shangri-La), and at the top, a public viewing gallery called The View from The Shard — which is the main reason most visitors come.

The viewing experience spans floors 68, 69, and 72, with the uppermost level being a partially open-air 'skydeck' where you feel the wind and get entirely unobstructed sightlines. On a clear day you can see roughly 40 miles in every direction — out over the Thames, across to Canary Wharf and the City, west toward the West End, and on exceptionally clear days as far as Windsor Castle. Interactive telescopes help you pick out landmarks, and the lift ride itself is a theatrical moment, with a light show synced to your ascent. The building also contains Oblix, a well-regarded restaurant and bar on level 32, which offers a similar (if lower) vantage point over a meal or cocktail.

The big insider tip: book a timed entry slot and go at dusk. You arrive in daylight, watch the sun drop over the city, and stay as the lights come on — it's far more dramatic than either full daylight or full dark. Nights and weekends sell out well in advance, especially in summer and around the holidays, so booking ahead isn't optional if you want a specific time. If you're budget-conscious, a drink at Oblix bar on level 32 gives you a spectacular view for the price of a cocktail rather than the ticket.

Local Tips

  1. 1

Book the 'dusk experience' slot — roughly 90 minutes before sunset — to catch daylight, golden hour, and city lights all in one visit.

  2. 2

If the ticket price is off-putting, a cocktail at Oblix bar on level 32 costs around the same and gives you a genuinely impressive view without the crowds.

  3. 3

The open-air skydeck on level 72 is exposed to wind at any time of year — even in summer, bring a layer you can pull on up there.

  4. 4

The Shard sits directly above London Bridge station, one of the busiest rail hubs in London, making it effortlessly reachable from almost anywhere in the city by train or Tube.

When to Go

Best times
Summer evenings (June–August)

Long daylight hours mean you can comfortably do the dusk visit — sunset around 9pm gives you a full golden-hour show. Hugely popular, so book as early as possible.

Try to avoid
December–January

Winter skies can be hazy and the open top deck is bitterly cold. Views are shorter and less vivid, though the city lights at night can be beautiful in their own right.

Weekends year-round

Significantly busier than weekdays, with peak-time queues even with pre-booked tickets. Weekday morning slots offer the same view with far fewer people.

Why Visit

01

The highest publicly accessible viewpoint in London, with clear sightlines stretching in every direction across the city.

02

The partially open-air top deck puts you genuinely above the clouds on misty days — a dramatic, physical experience, not just a window.

03

The dusk timing turns a standard tourist attraction into something genuinely memorable, as the entire city transitions from golden hour to glittering night.
