Skyline Queenstown is a cable car and mountaintop complex perched on Bob's Peak, rising about 450 metres above Queenstown. The gondola itself is one of the steepest in the Southern Hemisphere, and the ride takes roughly five minutes — but those five minutes reframe the entire town below you. At the top, you get a sweeping panorama of Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables mountain range, Cecil Peak, and the town spread out like a map. It's become one of Queenstown's defining experiences, not just because the view is spectacular but because it packages that view with a range of activities that suit everyone from solo travellers to families with kids.

Once you're up top, the options multiply fast. The luge is the main draw for most people — a wheeled cart on a dedicated track that winds down the hillside, ranging from a gentle scenic route to a faster, more technical descent. Most visitors do multiple runs. There's also a mountain bike park accessed from the gondola, a zipline, and the Skyline Restaurant which offers a buffet with views that make the food taste better than it probably deserves. After dark, the gondola continues running and the panorama shifts to a carpet of lights over the lake — genuinely romantic and worth the trip up again if you went earlier in the day.

The gondola base is a short, steep walk up Brecon Street from Queenstown's town centre — about 10 minutes on foot, or you can take the free shuttle. Luge rides are sold in bundles, and buying at least three or four runs is the standard advice because one is never enough. Book online in advance during peak summer (December to February) when queues at the gondola can stretch significantly. The gondola-only ticket is cheaper if you're just after the views, but most people find themselves wanting to stay longer than planned.

Local Tips

  1. 1

Buy at least four luge runs, not two — everyone wishes they'd done more, and the per-run price drops with bundles.

  2. 2

The gondola runs until 9pm, so going up for sunset and staying for the night view is a classic move and far less crowded than the midday rush.

  3. 3

If you're fit and adventurous, you can hike up to Bob's Peak on the track behind the gondola base and ride the gondola back down — great way to earn the view.

  4. 4

The Skyline Restaurant buffet is convenient but pricey for what it is — if you're just after the view with a drink, the bar area works fine without committing to the full dinner.

When to Go

Best times
December–February (Summer)

Peak season with the longest daylight hours and best visibility, but queues at the gondola can be significant. Book online and go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday crush.

June–August (Winter)

Snow on the Remarkables creates a dramatic backdrop and crowds are thinner on weekdays. The mountaintop can be cold and windy, so dress accordingly.

Sunset and early evening

The transition from golden hour to nighttime lights over the lake is exceptional — arriving for sunset and staying through dark gives you two distinct experiences in one visit.

Try to avoid
Midday in peak season

Gondola queues and luge wait times are at their longest between roughly 11am and 3pm during summer and school holidays.

Why Visit

01

The view from Bob's Peak — Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables, and Queenstown laid out below — is the definitive Queenstown panorama, and the gondola is the easiest way to get there.

02

The luge is genuinely fun for all ages: a wheeled cart on a hillside track that you can ride as fast or as gently as you like, with most people doing multiple laps.

03

At night the gondola keeps running and the lights over the lake turn it into one of the most atmospheric spots in town — a completely different experience from the daytime visit.
