Welcome to
Essaouira
Morocco
Essaouira is Morocco's most atmospheric Atlantic port — a windswept, blue-and-white medina city of ramparts, fishing boats, and the haunting Gnawa music that drifts from every doorway. The constant Atlantic wind (Essaouira means "well-designed" in Berber, a nod to the fortifications) makes it a world-class kitesurfing and windsurfing destination, but the city's real draw is its melancholy beauty and creative energy. Jimi Hendrix famously visited in the 1960s and the town has drawn artists, musicians, and writers ever since; the argan oil produced in the surrounding forests, the freshly grilled sardines of the port, and the thuya wood craftsmen of the medina give it a sensory richness that is entirely its own.
